Question: In Star Wars Episode 2 what is the story behind the jedi Cypher Dias and the creation of the clone army?
In episode 2 (attack of the clones) when Obi Wan Kenobi goes to Camino and talks with the cloners, they say that a jedi named Cypher Dias (I don't know how to spell it) ordered the creation of the clone army. Is this ever explained, does this Cypher Dias have something to do with Senator Palpatine? Why did he want the clone army made for the republic?
Answer: Sipher Dyas (I don't know the correct spelling either, so don't worry!!) was a real Jedi of the Jedi Order. He was killed (I presume slain by Dooku or Darth Sidious) ten years before the events of EPISODE II. Someone took his identity (either Darth Sidious or Count Dooku) and ordered the Clone army to be produced on Kamino on behalf of the unaware Jedi Knights, so that they would be forced into using them by the time Count Dooku had begun his Separatist uprising.It was never really explained in EPISODES II and III who had taken Dyas identity or who hid the location of Kamino from the Jedi Archives but, from the Lucas books, it's assumed it was Dooku who did this-after all he was a Jedi before he left the Temple/Order prior to the start of EPISODE II.
Also, as "a man named Tyranus", Dooku (known as the Sith Lord Darth Tyrnaus) recruited Jango Fett as the blueprint for the Clone Army that the Kaminoans would use, so in all likelihood it was Dooku posing as Dyas.
It may well be that Sipher Dyas may have been chosen by Lucas deliberately because it sounds simlilar to Sidious, hinting that Dark Forces were at work against the Republic.
